Ibom Air took delivery of its fourth Airbus A220-300 aircraft on Friday, 18 February 2022, expanding the Akwa Ibom State-owned carrier's fleet as it works to grow beyond its current network of domestic Nigerian routes.
The airline, which began operations from Uyo in 2019, said the new aircraft would initially be deployed on its busiest domestic routes, including Lagos and Abuja, freeing up other aircraft in its fleet for planned regional expansion later in the year.
Regional Ambitions
Ibom Air's chief executive said the carrier was in early discussions on potential routes to neighbouring West African countries, describing the fourth aircraft delivery as a milestone in the airline's transition from a state-backed regional Nigerian carrier toward a broader West African network operator.
Aviation analysts said Ibom Air's expansion came as several Nigerian carriers sought to diversify beyond a domestic market squeezed by rising fuel costs and foreign exchange scarcity, with regional routes offering an alternative source of revenue in harder currency.
