The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has officially launched the Drone — Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Remotely Piloted Aircraft System — management platform, establishing for the first time a comprehensive digital framework for the registration, licensing, and airspace coordination of unmanned aerial vehicles operating in Nigerian airspace.
The launch, announced at the NCAA's Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, marks a significant step in the authority's effort to bring regulatory order to a drone sector that has grown rapidly across Nigeria's commercial, agricultural, media, security, and logistics industries, often ahead of the formal oversight infrastructure needed to manage it safely.
What the System Covers
The UAS management platform provides a centralised digital system through which drone operators can register their unmanned aircraft, apply for operational permits, and coordinate flights with the NCAA's airspace management function. The system is designed to capture data on drone operators, aircraft specifications, and intended operating areas — enabling the NCAA to maintain situational awareness of unmanned traffic in Nigerian airspace in a way that was previously impossible.
The platform also supports the enforcement of the NCAA's existing drone regulations, which require operators of drones above a specified weight threshold to hold valid registration and, for commercial operations, appropriate certification from the authority. The regulations govern where drones may be operated, at what altitudes, in what proximity to airports, manned aircraft, and sensitive infrastructure, and under what conditions.
Why Drone Regulation Matters for Manned Aviation
The rapid proliferation of drones in Nigeria has created genuine safety concerns for manned aircraft operations. Reports of drone sightings in proximity to airport approaches at Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt have increased as drone availability has grown and awareness of airspace restrictions has remained inconsistent among recreational and commercial operators.
An incident in June 2026 involving an aircraft making an unauthorised landing near Asaba Airport underscored the broader challenge of monitoring unscheduled aerial activities in Nigerian airspace — a challenge to which the UAS management platform is one part of the regulatory response.
The NCAA said the platform will be developed further in subsequent phases, with additional capabilities for real-time flight tracking and automated conflict detection between drone operations and manned aircraft corridors expected in future updates.
